Build active reading habits

28 November 2024 at 06:27

If youโ€™ve made it this far, youโ€™ve probably set up your account, followed your favorite sources, and organized your content neatly. Now itโ€™s time to take the next step and unlock Inoreaderโ€™s full potential by building active reading habits that will keep you informed and ahead of the curve! Say goodbye to distractions, endless scrolling, and wasted time. With Inoreader, you can focus on what truly matters for your personal and professional growth.

Here are some tools to help you make active reading a daily habit:

Saved

Think of the Saved section in your tab bar as your personal library. Itโ€™s where all your articles for later reading, archived items, annotations, web pages, and tags come together in one convenient place. Found something interesting but donโ€™t have time to read it right away? No problem โ€“ just save it for later by clicking the Save button while browsing a feed or folder or after opening an article.

Read later

Your saved items appear in the Read later section of Saved, complete with estimated reading times, progress tracking, and editable metadata. The Continue reading tab lets you pick up right where you left off, and optional email reminders help you stay on top of your reading list.

Archive

Keep your reading list clutter-free by moving finished articles to the Archive. From there, you can restore them to Read later, leave them archived forever, or remove them permanently. You can archive articles manually or use bulk operations (a Pro feature) to select and archive multiple items at once.

Web pages

Go beyond your feeds and save external web pages for future reading. Use the + Add web page button in Inoreader or the browser extension, available for both web and mobile apps.

Annotations & notes

Active reading is about capturing insights, and Inoreader makes that easy. Mark important phrases or paragraphs as you read by selecting the text and clicking the annotation button. You can add comments to specific selections or leave notes on entire articles using the Create note button. All annotations and notes are stored in the Saved section for quick access.

Highlighters

Speed up your reading with highlighters, which help you spot keywords or phrases at a glance. To create them, head to Automate in your tab bar, click Highlighters, and then Create highlighter. Itโ€™s an easy way to boost efficiency, especially when handling large volumes of content.

With these tools, youโ€™re ready to master active reading and stay ahead with Inoreader. Want access to even more powerful features? Upgrade to Pro and unlock advanced tools like rules, filters, global search, monitoring feeds, and more!

Organize your content and customize your account

28 November 2024 at 06:27

Now that youโ€™re following your favorite sources in Inoreader, itโ€™s time to organize them for a seamless browsing experience. Inoreader is designed not only to bring you the latest information but also to help you manage it with ease. With our powerful organization and customization features, you can save time and tailor everything to your unique preferences.

Hereโ€™s how to make your Inoreader account truly feel like home:

Folders

Group your feeds into folders by topic to keep your reading list neat and organized. To create a folder, open Feeds, click the Create folder button at the top of the sidebar, type a name, and add feeds as needed. Folders will appear in your sidebar, where you can drag and drop feeds in and out, arrange them in any order, and even add a single feed to multiple folders for added flexibility. Pro users can take it further by applying rules and filters to folders and all the sources they contain simultaneously.

Tags

While folders are great for organizing feeds, tags are perfect for labeling individual articles you want to keep forever. To add a tag, click the Add tags button while reading an article, type a new tag name, or select an existing one. You can also add tags while browsing your folders and feeds or use rules (a Pro feature) to tag articles automatically based on criteria you set. Find all your tagged articles under the Saved section in the tab bar, where you can cross-select tags for precise article discovery.

Dashboards

At the top of your tab bar, dashboards offer a personalized, at-a-glance view of your content. Create multiple dashboards with customizable widgets that display tips, relevant updates, trending articles, account stats, and more. Various widgets and layout options give you complete control over your dashboardsโ€™ look and functionality. Once youโ€™re happy with it, you can set a dashboard as your starting page. For easy account setup, we recommend using widgets from the Getting started section.

Article view

Enhance your reading experience by customizing how articles are displayed. While viewing a folder or feed, use the buttons in the upper right of the header to adjust layout, sorting, and grouping options. Layout controls the appearance of articles, and you can apply unique layouts to each feed, folder, and tag. Sorting lets you choose between โ€œnewest firstโ€ or โ€œoldest first,โ€ with โ€œnewest firstโ€ as the default. You can also group articles by feed or date within folders and tags, creating a helpful visual separation when managing large volumes of unread articles.

Account preferences

As you explore Inoreader, youโ€™ll find endless ways to customize your account. Visit Account and Preferences in your tab bar to adjust color themes, font sizes, optional buttons, and more to match your style. You can also manage your content, set up integrations with other platforms, and access different export options. Experiment with various settings until you find the perfect combination, and create a reading experience that feels tailor-made for you!

When youโ€™re ready, head over to the next part of our onboarding series and build active reading habits with Inoreader!

Getting started with Inoreader

28 November 2024 at 06:26

Congratulations! By reading this, youโ€™ve made a powerful choice to take back control of your online experience. With Inoreader, you can build your own newsfeed, filtering out the noise and focusing on the content that truly matters to you. In a world flooded with information (and misinformation), thatโ€™s no small feat. Inoreader is here to make it easier to stay informed, saving you time and effort. With all your favorite sources in one place, youโ€™ll enjoy a streamlined, personalized reading experience โ€“ free from ads, spam, and algorithm-driven feeds.

Hereโ€™s chapter one of everything you need to know:

Getting familiar with the interface

To make the most of Inoreader, it helps to understand the main parts of the interface:

  1. Tab bar (on the left): Where you navigate between key sections of your account, including Feeds, Saved, Search, and Preferences.
  2. Sidebar (next to tab bar): Updates dynamically based on your current section in the tab bar and displays relevant content, options, and tools.
  3. Reading panel (on the right): Where your articles appear as you add feeds, offering a clean and distraction-free reading space.

Adding your first feeds

Feeds are at the core of your Inoreader experience. Hereโ€™s how to start adding them:

  1. Go to Add feed (+) in the tab bar.
  2. Choose from a wide range of source types, including websites, Google News alerts, Facebook pages, Reddit feeds, Telegram channels, newsletters, and more.
  3. Enter a name or URL and follow the on-screen prompts to add a feed.

If youโ€™re coming from another service, like Feedly, use the Import feeds option in the sidebar to quickly transfer your sources. Unsure where to start? Check out our featured collections in the Website section, or use hashtags (e.g., #rss) to discover feeds by topic. Once added, you can view feeds individually or combine them all in the Newsfeed under Feeds.

Searching for articles

With feeds set up, youโ€™re ready to explore Inoreaderโ€™s powerful search tools:

  • Main search: Click Search in the tab bar (1) to find articles across your account or use global search to browse all public feeds (a Pro feature). Use filters (2) and the advanced query builder (3) to refine your searches.
  • Contextual search: When viewing a specific feed you follow, use the search bar at the top (1) to locate articles within it and use filters (2) to specify conditions.

Syncing across devices

Stay connected wherever you go. Inoreader works seamlessly on both desktop and mobile. Use our web version at www.inoreader.com or download the iOS and Android apps. All changes sync automatically across devices, keeping your feeds and preferences up-to-date.

With these basics in place, youโ€™re ready to make Inoreader your go-to reading tool. Unlock Inoreaderโ€™s full potential with the next part of our onboarding series, which will help you organize your content and customize your account!
