When Canadian and American teams face off against one another, it is commonplace for both countries' national anthems to be played or performed.

That was the case at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, when the Minnesota Wild visited the Senators for an NHL bout.

The visiting team's anthem is normally performed first, as was the case on Saturday night.

But, before the home crowd heard its own anthem, they let out boos at the end of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The game came on the same day that President Donald Trump signed an executive order, which will go into effect Tuesday, consisting of a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China.

Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff, according to the White House. In a statement obtained by Fox News Saturday, the Trump administration said the order is in response to an "extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, (that) constitutes a national emergency."

Ahead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation, Trump said he would "love" if Canada could become the "51st state."

On their four-game homestand that wrapped up following their 6-0 victory, the Senators hosted all USA teams – there are seven Canadian teams in the National Hockey League and 25 teams based in the states.

The Senators will kick off a four-game U.S. road trip against the Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning (two games), and Florida Panthers before returning home on Feb. 22 to host the Montreal Canadiens. 

The long layover comes due to the upcoming 4 Nations tournament featuring the USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden.

The New York Rangers are shuffling the deck.

The Rangers acquired disgruntled star J.T. Miller in a multiplayer deal with the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.

The team received Miller and defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom, while sending center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a protected 2025 first round draft pick to Vancouver.

The Canucks were expected to deal away either Miller or star center Elias Petersson after a reported rift between the two that dates back years.

"We’ve had our differences, maybe in some games, but I mean, he’s a teammate that I respect and yeah, he’s someone I like to play hockey with," Petersson said in February 2023 on the "32 Thoughts: The Podcast."

"Yeah, there’s a lot of speculation, obviously a lot, but he’s a teammate that I respect… it’s not an issue."

Shortly after that, Miller commented on his relationship with Petersson.

"Petey and my relationship has come a long way. We’re still working at it. We’re completely different people, you know what I mean? You’re not going to be BFFs with everybody, but at the same time you come to work together. We are polar opposites in a lot of ways, but we’re working at it. We’ve come a long way," Miller said via Sportsnet. 

The relationship became untenable between the pair as time went on.

After Miller was benched in the third period of the Canucks 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Nov. 17, the Canucks announced that Miller had taken a leave of absence on Nov. 20. Miller missed ten games, with his absence spanning a month.

Miller’s absence was 10 games, and the rift between the pair was brought up again. Both players were soon in trade rumors. 

Miller has always played with an edge, and Rangers general manager Chris Drury hopes that Miller can channel that edge he plays with to jolt the Rangers. 

"I want to thank J.T. for his time here in Vancouver," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. "J.T. was a passionate impact player and good leader for our hockey team. Moving him was not an easy decision but we are pleased with our return from the Rangers. Both Filip and Victor are good additions for our club, and we are excited to see what they bring to us on the ice."

Miller is in the second year of a seven-year, $56 million deal. The Canucks did not retain any money on Miller’s contract in the trade. 

This season, Miller has nine goals and 26 assists in 40 games after setting career highs last season in goals (37) and assists (66) last season. 

With the addition of Miller, the Rangers' top three centers now are: Vincent Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad and Miller, a strong group on paper.

The Rangers are 13th in the Eastern conference, five points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card spot. 

This will be Miller’s second stint with the Rangers, as he was drafted by the team with the 15th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Miller spent parts of six seasons with New York before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning with defenseman Ryan McDonaugh in February 2018. 

During his first stint in New York, Miller had 72 goals and 100 assists in 341 games. For his career, Miller has totaled 247 goals and 427 assists in 839 games.

The main prize of the trade for the Canucks is Chytil, who has 75 goals and 89 assists in 378 career games, including 11 goals and nine assists in 41 games this season.

Chytil missed all but 10 games with concussion issues last season but has shown flashes of stardom when healthy. 

"Heard some really good things," Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet said of Chytil. "I heard he’s very excited to come. Mancini I hear is a really big defenseman, young, that can play. Yeah, I think there’s some stuff to work with."

Miller may be able to join the Rangers for their matchup against the Boston Bruins at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. 

For the Canucks, their first game in the post-Miller era is against the Detroit Red Wings at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Washington Capitals and NHL superstar Alex Ovechkin is on the cusp of breaking a scoring record many believed would never be broken: the 894 goals scored by Wayne Gretzky over his illustrious career.

As of this writing, Ovechkin sits at 875 goals. Only he, Gretzky and Gordie Howe are members of the 800-goal club. With only 30 games left in the season – he missed 15 games this year with injuries – it will be tough, but not impossible to eclipse Gretzky’s record this year.  

That said, if he does not, there is not a person in hockey who does not believe Ovechkin will break the record early next year and go on to score over 900 goals. A record I predict will never be broken.

Ovechkin is a phenom; the human equivalent of a brick wall at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds; and arguably one of the top five players ever to skate in the NHL. The other four in my opinion are Gretzky, Howe, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.

Ovechkin also has that elusive "It Factor," which has made him world famous. Most especially in his native Russia.

Way back in the day as a teenager, I had a dream to play in the NHL. I was fortunate enough to get invited to one NHL camp and several minor league camps. Only a complete lack of talent and a knee injury kept me from realizing that dream. But it was the love of hockey that inspired me to follow the truly amazing career of Ovechkin. 

Years later, I executed a 180 away from sports and somehow ended up as a writer in the White House for two presidents, an official at the Pentagon, director of communications for former Sen. Bob Dole, a vice president of a well-known government relations firm, and a principal at the then largest law firm in the world, where I specialized in politics and government relations.

And it is because of that background, that I have been viewing Ovechkin through a totally different prism. 

Anyone who has remotely followed the life and career of Ovechkin knows that he is a man of character. He is renowned for being a great husband, father, friend, teammate, and a giving philanthropist. 

He is also renowned for loving his native Russia and her people. As he should.

Today – quite sadly – we live in a very polarized country and world where far too many people operate from personal and ideological silos separated from all others. As one who has worked in politics at a fairly high level, I will confess to not being a fan of either political party.

My "Party" for the last 15 years or so has been the "commonsense" Party. I strongly believe it is in the best interest of all of us to speak to each other in a civil manner while seeking out shared interests and solutions.

Over the last three years, one of the subjects that has become politicized and polarized is the war in Ukraine. This is not the forum to have a back and forth on that subject. That acknowledged, I will venture to say that we as a people and as a nation must make it clear that the people of Russia are not our enemy. Unfortunately, over the last three years, we have witnessed a number of athletes from Russia treated as the "enemy" by some.

Because of the war in Ukraine, some have chosen to rhetorically attack Ovechkin for his friendship with Vladimir Putin. While it’s always easy – especially in the age of social media – to attack someone on the floor of the "arena" from the peanut gallery in the stands or from 30,000 feet up, it’s also almost impossible to know the facts, the history, or someone’s heart from that distance.

Judgments of Putin aside, I find it admirable that Ovechkin – while making it clear multiple times that while he is not political, he does love his country and does not want to see war between Russia and Ukraine – has refused to walk away from his friendship with the Russian president.

And like it or not, it is that decision, along with his fame, charisma and personal generosity, which have made Ovechkin a beloved figure in Russia.  

Today, as I operate from under my political hat, I am always scoping the landscape to assess who might be the best candidate for the Democrats and the Republicans come 2028. JD Vance for the Republicans. No idea for the splintered Democrats. 

It is from under that same hat that I look at the landscape of Russia with the understanding that at some point, Putin will stand aside. And then what? Who might fill such a tremendous vacuum?

As someone who does have a fairly deep understanding of politics, all I can say is that Alexander Ovechkin checks a great many boxes. Never say "never."

Tom McVie, a Boston Bruins ambassador who coached the New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, has died. He was 89.

"The entire Boston Bruins organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tom McVie," Bruins’ president Cam Neely said in a statement Monday.

"Tom was a huge part of our Bruins family, having served as coach, scout and ambassador for more than 30 years. His hockey mind, colorful personality, gruff voice, and unmatched sense of humor livened up every room he entered, and he will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family and many loved ones."

McVie played 21 seasons of minor league hockey, playing in the International League, the Western League and the Eastern Hockey League before beginning his coaching career.

His NHL coaching career began with the Capitals when he took over on Dec. 31, 1975. After that season, he coached the Capitals for two more seasons.

After coaching the Capitals, he helped the Jets win the World Hockey Association to the 1979 Avco Cup and then became the head coach for the Jets during their first two NHL seasons, in 1979-80 and 1980-81.

Following his stint with Winnipeg, McVie became the second coach for the Devils after the team relocated from Denver in 1982.

McVie was 126-263 with 73 ties across 462 regular-season games as a head coach.

McVie’s name is on the Stanley Cup as an ambassador for the Bruins, when they won in 2011.

Prior to becoming an ambassador with the Bruins, he was an assistant coach for them.

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid has been suspended three games for cross-checking Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland in the head. 

Late in the Canucks' 3-2 win over the Oilers on Saturday, McDavid and Garland got tied up in a scrum. 

After being tangled for a few seconds, McDavid got up and cross-checked Garland in the side of his head with his stick. The Oilers star was promptly thrown out of the game with a match penalty for intent to injure.

McDavid had a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Monday, and shortly after the hearing, McDavid’s suspension was announced.

Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers was also suspended three games for his actions in that same scrum between McDavid and Garland. 

Myers crosschecked Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard in the face during the fracas after the whistle.

This is the second time McDavid has been suspended in his 10-year career. He was suspended for two games in 2019 for an illegal check to the head. 

The suspension will cost McDavid $195,312 in salary over the next three games. He was previously fined $5,000 for elbowing a player in 2021.

The Oilers will not have McDavid for their game against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, in their rematch against the Canucks on Thursday, and when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

McDavid is eligible to return to the lineup next Monday when the Oilers take on the Seattle Kraken. 

McDavid has been sensational, as he has been his whole career, this season. The three-time Hart Trophy (regular season MVP winner) has 65 points (20 goals, 45 assists) across 43 games this season. 

The Oilers are 29-14-3, and are second in the Pacific Division, just one point behind the Vegas Golden Knights.

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid continues to climb up the ranks in Oilers history. 

McDavid had two goals and an assist in the Oilers 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday, passing Jarri Kurri for second all-time in points in Edmonton history with 1,044 points. 

The Oilers all-time points leader is Wayne Gretzky, who put up a mind-boggling 1,669 points in nine seasons with the team.

McDavid has spent his entire 10-year career with the Oilers and will likely need to spend the next five or six years with the team and continue to produce the way he has to pass Gretzky.

After two first period power-play goals by the Wild, McDavid collected the puck in center ice after a turnover and started a passing play that led to Zach Hyman scoring and cut the Wild lead to 2-1. Almost immediately after Hyman scored, the Oilers went on the power play, and McDavid scored on a slick pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, tying the game at 2-2 to end the first period. 

Wild forward Ryan Hartman put Minnesota back on top 3-2 at the beginning of the second period after a quick goal off a face-off. The Oilers responded once again, as Nugent-Hopkins tipped in defenseman Ty Emberson’s shot to tie the game 3-3.

The Oilers took the lead in the third period when Vasily Podkolzin’s pass deflected off a Wild defenseman's skate and into the net just 1:28 into the period to put Edmonton up 4-3.

Then McDavid, as he normally does, made some magic happen. 

On a 2-on-1 entry into the offensive zone, McDavid nimbly handled the kick around the sliding defenseman and then fired a sharp-angle shot from tight and roofed it. McDavid’s second goal not only sealed the game, putting the Oilers up 5-3, but was the point that moved him into second all-time in Oilers franchise history. 

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch talked after the game about McDavid’s accomplishment. 

"Quite a remarkable feat. For him to go up the scoring list as quickly as he has, and within an organization that has had so many significant players. I’ve seen so many remarkable things from him. He’s a tremendous player and great teammate. I said I wouldn’t be surprised anymore just because he surprises you so often over these years, but it’s a nice feat for him and the guys are very proud of him," Knoblauch said. 

The Oilers have now won seven of their last eight games with their comeback win over the Wild, and McDavid’s sensational play is a big reason why.

The star center has 19 goals and 43 assists in 41 games played this season, and has continued to be a driving force behind the Oilers' success.

The Oilers are 28-13-3, are second in the Pacific division and in a playoff spot.

Their next game is a heavyweight tilt against the Colorado Avalanche on the road on Thursday, at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Twelve Los Angeles and Anaheim sports teams announced Monday they would contribute more than $8 million to support victims of the wildfires that have plagued the area since last week.

The Anaheim Ducks, Angel City FC, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Sparks made the announcement in a joint statement.

The money will go to support victims and those fighting the fires. The American Red Cross, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, California Community Foundation Wildlife Recovery Fund, Team Rubicon and several other local animal rescue organizations were named as the beneficiaries of the donations.

Los Angeles residents who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the fires will also be the recipients of about $3 million worth of Fanatics merchandise as well. The teams, in partnership with their own foundations, teamed up with Fanatics and the Fanatics Foundation to provide the gear. Evacuated victims can participate in the distribution events on Jan. 17 at Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium and BMO Stadium.

The wildfires have left dozens dead and thousands of structures burned. Several games have either been canceled or moved because of the wildfires as well.

The Rams were set to host the Minnesota Vikings in their playoff game on Monday night, but the matchup was moved to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The Lakers already saw a game postponed last week due to the fires. The team said Monday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs will be dedicated to the Los Angeles community.

"We are committed as ever to Los Angeles," Lakers head coach J.J. Redick said in a news release. "We recognize it’s not just our community that has been impacted by this. We’re committed to helping people as much as we can and we’re going to do that." 

Officials warned earlier Monday the threat to the area is not over.

"We are not in the clear. I want to make sure of that. We are not in the clear as of yet, and we must not let our guard down," Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said. 

"As the increasing wind event is upon us as we speak, the Los Angeles City Fire Department has maximized our resource capabilities and response capabilities," Crowley added. "All available LAFD resources have been staffed. I have strategically pre-positioned engine strike teams and task forces, which are dedicated to rapid response for any new fire that breaks out in the city."

A former top adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a grim outlook on the world leader’s political future, days after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump floated NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a possible replacement.

A countdown started earlier this month on Trudeau’s days in office after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from his cabinet. On Friday, Trudeau’s former chief adviser Gerry Butts thought it was "unlikely" that Trudeau would lead the Liberal Party in the next election.

Butts wrote in a Substack newsletter that Freeland’s resignation was a big blow for the party, and it could mean that Trudeau's political fate is sealed.

"If, as is now widely expected, Mr. Trudeau's resignation is imminent, the only way forward is a real leadership race," Butts wrote, via The Canadian Press.

"If you want to know who can play hockey, put on a hockey game. It doesn't matter who you think you support at this moment, we'll all have a more seasoned view if we see these people in live action."

Butts served as Trudeau’s principal secretary when he won election in 2015. His strong words came days after Trump teased Canada over its political turmoil, even floating Gretzky as a possible replacement for Trudeau.

"I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada - You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,’" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Since Freeland’s resignation, Trudeau has faced calls to resign. Trump weighed in on Freeland’s departure as well.

"The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau," Trump posted to his Truth Social, trolling Trudeau, after previously suggesting Canada should become the 51st state in the U.S.

"Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!"

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee chair John Williamson said that lawmakers will start meetings on Jan. 7 to consider a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government, according to Reuters. The vote would have to pass the House of Commons to defeat the government.

Canadian Parliament will reconvene on Jan. 27, according to Reuters.

"It is now clear that the Liberal Government does not have the confidence of Parliament. Conservative, Bloc Quebecois and NDP members — representing a majority of MPs - have all announced they will vote non-confidence in the Liberal Government," Williamson wrote in his letter.

President-elect Trump floated NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential candidate to replace Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister in a social media post on Wednesday.

And it appeared Janet Gretzky – Wayne’s wife – got the message.

Trump’s post came as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has faced pressure to step down. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from Trudeau's cabinet. At the same time, opposition leader Jagmeet Singh called on Trudeau to resign.

The main opposition Conservatives have demanded an election.

Trump also weighed in after Freeland resigned.

He was seen last month at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, after Trump’s presidential election win, wearing a "Make America Great Again" cap.

The New York Rangers recalled hard-hitting defenseman Matt Rempe back to the main roster on Friday and three days later he finds himself suspended for eight games.

Rempe elbowed and boarded Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen during New York’s 3-1 win on Friday night. He was given a game misconduct for the play.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced he was suspended for eight games for the play. He was also fined $80,000. The league said Rempe was considered to be a repeat offender. He has only played in 22 career regular-season games and he’s been ejected four times.

Rempe spent a majority of the season playing in the American Hockey League for the Rangers’ affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He started the season with New York but didn’t last long with the team. He was recalled briefly in November before being sent down again.

Friday night’s win was Rempe’s first game with the Rangers since Nov. 25. He had three goals, two assists and 22 penalty minutes in 18 games with Hartford.

He became extremely popular among Rangers fans late last season and into the postseason because of his hard-nosed style of play. He was ejected twice and received a four-game suspension for an elbow to the head of New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler in March.

The 2020 sixth-round pick has no points and 24 penalty minutes in five games for New York.

The Rangers lost to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, 3-1. The team is 16-16-1 this season.
