Drivers targeted in emerging crime trend have one thing in common

Texas law enforcement issued a word of warning to Ford F-series truck owners after they broke up an organized crime ring targeting the popular vehicle model.

Three Texas men are facing charges for allegedly stripping the taillights off dozens of high-end Ford trucks, indicating a new trend of vehicle thefts that has owners on high alert.

Jimmy Dean Miller, Jaleel D. Fasion and Sergio Giovanni Sanfilippo are charged with engaging in organized criminal activity after police say the trio stole over $92,000 worth of taillights.

The ring operated between September 2024 and January 2025, targeting 34 victims, according to the Webster Police Department.

FORD SPOTLIGHTS A NEW LINEUP OF POPULAR TRUCKS

Miller, Fasion and Sanfilippo traveled throughout the I-45 highway corridor between Houston and Galveston, according to authorities. Officers relied on surveillance to track the suspects as they entered high-traffic areas, ultimately establishing probable cause for the arrests.

Most of the vehicles targeted by the three men were F-350s, according to police. The latest models of the trucks can cost more than $100,000.

"We found that taillights from luxury Ford vehicles were being stolen," Webster Police Chief Pete Bacon told Fox News Digital. "We believe the reason is that these taillights contain specific sensors, and these sensors are part of the entire [luxury] system and cost a lot of money."

Once thieves have access to the tailgate of a vehicle, they can remove the lights by simply unscrewing them from the truck, making off with the loot within a matter of seconds.

"If they have two or three guys working in conjunction, they can get these lights removed in under a minute," Bacon told Fox News Digital.

MAN NAMED ‘OPTIMUS PRIME’ ARRESTED FOR AUTO THEFT: TEXAS POLICE

Bacon believes that the taillights were being sold online to truck owners who are looking for replacements but may not want to pay retail price. The investigation revealed that the trio sold the stolen parts on sites such as Facebook Marketplace, with one victim possibly purchasing his own headlights back, police said.

Bacon encourages drivers to take precautions to protect their vehicles.

Drivers can purchase aftermarket tailgate locks or scratch a series of numbers into the inside of their taillights, making them identifiable if they are stolen, according to Bacon. Truck owners should consult their truck’s dealership to ensure any security measures do not impact their warranty.

FLORIDA AUTHORITIES ARREST ALLEGED RETAIL THEFT RING MEMBERS ACCUSED OF STEALING $90K WORTH OF GOODS

Ford did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Court records indicate that the three men are facing criminal charges for the thefts. Fasion is charged but has been released from custody and Sanfilippo is currently out on bond.

A magistrate judge ruled that no probable cause was found in Miller’s case, but prosecutors are planning to refile the charges through a grand jury, the district attorney’s office told Fox News Digital.

The Webster Police Department worked with the Galveston County Auto Crimes Task Force, League City Police Department and Seabrook Police Department to apprehend the suspects.

Bacon warns that although this began as a regional issue, there is a likelihood of copycat criminals and truck owners should take precautions to protect their vehicles.

"Once a group of thieves figures out what kind of niche they're going after, then we'll probably have more," Bacon said. "There's going to be other rings out there targeting taillights. I don't think with these three arrests, that this problem is going to end."

Washington state lawmakers propose requiring speed limiting devices in cars of drivers with speeding history

A bill introduced in the Washington state legislature would require drivers with a history of speeding to have a speed limiting device placed on their cars.

House Bill 1596 was proposed after supporters say an increase in fatal accidents was caused by speeding. The bill was heard in the House Transportation Committee on Thursday and would require an "intelligent speed assistance device" to be installed in the cars of certain drivers, according to Fox 13.

The device limits the speed of the car using GPS technology to follow the speed limit where the vehicle is being driven. These drivers could exceed the speed limit up to three times a month.

A driver would have the device on their car if they have a new restricted license established by the bill. This is similar to how ignition interlock devices are used for people with a history of drunk driving.

BLUE CITY JUDGE SLAMMED FOR RELEASING VIOLENT SUSPECT ARRESTED AGAIN FOR VICIOUS ATTACK ON TEEN

Drivers would also receive the device during the probation period after their license was suspended for racing or "excessive speeding," which is defined as driving at least 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. Drivers could also be ordered by a court to have a speed-limiting device on their car.

"We’re losing Washingtonians and family members are losing loved ones unnecessarily, tragically and preventably," Democrat state Rep. Mari Leavitt, a prime sponsor of the bill, said.

"These aren’t accidents," she added. "They’re intentionally folks choosing behavior that is harming and often killing folks."

According to data in 2023 from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, one in three fatal crashes in the state involved a speeding driver. The total number of fatal crashes and the number involving speeding has been trending upward since 2019.

"Between 2019 and 2024, tickets to speeding drivers in excess of 50 miles an hour over the speed limit increased by 200%," the commission's Shelly Baldwin testified. "So we know that this is an increasing problem that we’ve been dealing with."

Republican state Rep. Gloria Mendoza questioned how the bill helps keep people safe by allowing speeders to continue driving.

"So we're trying to help them get back their license by giving them this tool," Mendoza said. "So how is this helping save lives?"

Leavitt responded: "We want to find a way for them to be able to drive lawfully, but safely. And having them on the road in a safe manner is going to save lives, because they’re driving anyway, and they’re driving fast. And this device, these speed limiters, are going to ensure that they can't."

The bill has not yet been scheduled for a vote out of committee.

800,000 VW electric vehicle owners' data exposed by software bug

German automaker Volkswagen isn't having a great time. The company is planning to cut capacity at five factories, reducing production by about 700,000 vehicles, while also laying off more than 35,000 workers in its home country. Now, reports suggest the company had a massive data leak at its subsidiary software company Cariad, which exposed personal data, including geolocation data, of around 800,000 EV owners online and accessible for months. Such information could be valuable to criminals for extortion purposes. What's interesting is that a hacker association informed the company about this data leak after receiving a tip from an anonymous hacker.

I’M GIVING AWAY THE LATEST & GREATEST AIRPODS PRO 2

Enter the giveaway by signing up for my free newsletter.

As reported by Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, Volkswagen is facing a major data security issue after movement data from 800,000 electric cars and the personal contact information of their owners were left exposed on the internet. This data revealed sensitive details, such as the precise locations where cars were parked, including private locations like people’s homes, government buildings and even questionable spots like brothels.

The exposed data includes detailed movement patterns of these vehicles, allowing for the creation of comprehensive profiles of individuals' daily activities. This could be particularly concerning for public figures or anyone with privacy concerns.

Several car brands under the Volkswagen group, including VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda, were affected by the breach, which exposed sensitive data across multiple countries. The information was stored on Amazon cloud servers without adequate protection, leaving it vulnerable for months before the issue was discovered.

For around 466,000 of the 800,000 affected vehicles, the location data was detailed enough to map out drivers’ daily routines. Spiegel reported that the list of affected users included German politicians, business leaders, the entire EV fleet used by Hamburg police and even suspected intelligence agents.

The breach came to light when an anonymous hacker tipped off the Chaos Computer Club. While Volkswagen left the data easily accessible during this time, there is no indication so far that anyone misused or accessed it maliciously.

We reached out to Volkswagen for comment but did not hear back by our deadline.

THE AI-POWERED GRANDMA TAKING ON SCAMMERS

The Volkswagen data leak is more than just a tech issue. It is a real concern for anyone who values their privacy. With precise location data out in the open, someone could figure out where you live, work or spend your free time. This information could be misused in many ways, from targeted scams where hackers pretend to be Volkswagen or its partners to trick you into giving up sensitive information, to more personal threats like stalking or harassment.

Imagine someone knowing your daily routine or identifying places you visit that you would prefer to keep private. Visits to clinics, legal offices or other sensitive locations could expose you to embarrassment or blackmail.

The breach also raises concerns for business leaders, government officials and military personnel as their movements linked to high-security or restricted areas could be exposed, increasing the risk of corporate espionage or national security threats. Moreover, when paired with other vulnerabilities, such as app credentials, hackers could potentially exploit the data to unlock or even control vehicles remotely.

THE ONE SIMPLE TRICK TO HELP KEEP OUT CYBER CREEPS ON IPHONE

In light of the recent Volkswagen data breach, it is crucial to take proactive measures to safeguard your personal data. Here are 6 ways you can stay safe after this leak:

1) Check your app settings: Review the permissions and data-sharing settings in your car's companion app. Disable features that track or share your location if they are not essential for your use. Regularly update the app to ensure you have the latest security patches.

2) Be alert to scams: Keep an eye out for suspicious emails, messages or calls pretending to be from Volkswagen or related services. Avoid clicking on links or sharing sensitive information without verifying the sender.

3) Consider data opt-out options: Many vehicles with online features allow you to limit or disable certain data-sharing functionalities. Check your car’s settings to reduce the amount of personal data being collected.

4) Strengthen your online accounts: If you use the same email or password across multiple accounts, update them immediately. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.

5) Beware of snail mail scams: While most people focus on digital threats, physical mail scams can also follow a data breach like this. If your contact information was exposed, you might receive fraudulent letters pretending to be from Volkswagen or related services. These could ask for payments, personal details or even encourage you to visit fake websites.

6) Install strong antivirus software: Ensure that you have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices, especially those connected to your vehicle or its apps. This can help protect you from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

30% OF AMERICANS OVER 65 WANT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE WEB. HERE’S WHY

The Volkswagen data leak is a glaring example of how companies need to take user data security more seriously. Exposing personal details and precise locations is not just a technical mistake. It is a massive breach of trust. While VW has patched the issue, the damage shows how important it is for businesses to be more responsible with the data they collect. People deserve to know their information is safe and used only when necessary. If companies cannot protect their customers’ privacy, they risk losing their confidence altogether. It is time for the industry to step up and do better.

Do you think stricter regulations should be in place for companies that handle user data? Let us know by writing us at Cyberguy.com/Contact.

EXCLUSIVE: Red state sues insurer for using customer data to build ‘world’s largest driving behavior database'

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing Allstate insurance company for allegedly illegally collecting, using and selling the driving behavior data of over 45 million Americans.

Paxton filed the suit in the District Court for Montgomery County, Texas, on Monday morning. In the suit, he accuses Allstate, and its subsidiary data analytics company "Arity," of secretly using driving data from over 45 million Americans’ mobile devices, in-car devices and vehicles to build the "world’s largest driving behavior database," consisting of "trillions of miles" worth of data.

"Our investigation revealed that Allstate and Arity paid millions of dollars to install Allstate’s tracking software," Paxton said in a Monday statement. "The personal data of millions of Americans was sold to insurance companies without their knowledge or consent in violation of the law. Texans deserve better and we will hold all these companies accountable."

Allstate is one of the largest auto, home and life insurance companies in the U.S. It is headquartered in Glenview, Illinois.

COURT ORDERS BIDEN ADMIN TO STOP SELLING BORDER WALL MATERIALS, WAS 'ILLEGALLY SUBVERTING' LAWS: TEXAS AG

The suit said that in 2015, Allstate and Arity developed and integrated software into several third-party apps so that when a consumer downloaded these apps onto their phone, they unwittingly downloaded the tracking software. Once Allstate’s software was downloaded onto a customer’s device, they could monitor the consumer’s location and movement in real time.

According to the suit, the company used the driving data to justify raising customers’ insurance rates and further profited by selling the data to third parties, including other insurance companies.

"Defendants [Allstate and Arity] never informed consumers about their extensive data collection, nor did Defendants obtain consumers’ consent to engage in such data collection," the suit said. "Finally, Defendants never informed consumers about the myriad of ways Defendants would analyze, use, and monetize their sensitive data."

TEXAS AG SUES NCAA OVER TRANS INCLUSION IN WOMEN'S SPORTS

Because tens of millions of Americans, including millions of Texans, were never informed about their driving data being gathered, Paxton argues that Allstate’s data-gathering scheme violates the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, the Data Broker Law, and the Texas Insurance Code’s prohibition on unfair and deceptive acts and practices in the insurance business.

He is asking the court to permanently block Allstate from continuing to gather and use customers’ data and to impose thousands of dollars in civil penalties per customer.

According to Paxton, this suit is the first enforcement action ever filed by a state attorney general to enforce a comprehensive data privacy law

Fox News Digital reached out to Allstate but did not immediately receive a response.

TikToker whose speeding BMW killed 6 farmworkers avoids possible 55-year prison sentence with plea deal

A 17-year-old Florida TikToker who posted videos of himself racing his expensive BMW sports car plowed into the back of a small SUV three years ago at a speed in excess of 150 mph – killing six farmworkers leaving their shift.

The crash in Palm Beach County was one of the county's deadliest road traffic incidents, according to local reports.

On Monday, Noah Galle, now 20, reached a plea deal with prosecutors in which he was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison after he pleaded guilty to six counts of vehicular homicide.

Galle, the son of prominent local attorney Craig Galle, prepared a statement of remorse which his defense attorney Liz Parker, a former traffic homicide prosecutor, read out, according to The Palm Beach Post.

The deal means Galle avoided trial where he could have been hit with a minimum 55-year sentence or a maximum of 90 years in prison, although consecutive sentences for each count are almost never imposed by the courts unless a defendant has a significant prior record of crimes, a spokesperson for West Palm Beach Chief Assistant State Attorney Al Johnson told Fox News Digital.

Johnson said the deal was fair and it had the backing of the victims' family members.

"This is a significant punishment. What is the proper sentence in a tragic case like this?" Johnson told Fox News Digital via a statement.

"No amount of prison time will bring the victims back to their families. The families have written to us that they did not object to this plea. Some of them didn't even want him to go to jail at all. One wanted us to drop the case entirely."

TRUMP, DESANTIS JOIN THOUSANDS TO MOURN 3 FLORIDA DEPUTIES KILLED IN ROADSIDE CRASH

Johnson said it was significant that Calle was 17 years old when the crime was committed and he had no prior involvement with the law.

"We feel this is an appropriate resolution."

According to prosecutors, Galle was driving his BMW M5 at the breakneck speed of 151 mph on State Road 7 near Delray Beach when he barreled into the SUV, which had six people riding in it, on Jan. 27, 2022, at around 11 p.m. The speed limit on that road is 55 mph.

The SUV swerved into the median and rolled over several times. Five of the six were killed instantly and the sixth later died.

The crash killed the SUV’s driver, Mirlane Julceus, 45, as well as her passengers: Michel Louis Saint, 77, Marie Michelle Louis, 60, Remzie Michel, 53, Filaine Dieu, 46, and Vanice Percina, 29.

The six victims were leaving Pero Family Farms on State Road 7 near Atlantic Avenue at the time of the wreck.

Aaron Wayt, a senior trial attorney with Pumphrey Law, a Tallahassee-based criminal defense firm, said that the plea deal is in line with such arrangements in the state. Neither Wayt nor his firm were involved in the case.

"In Florida, sentences for vehicular homicide cases have a wide range depending on the unique circumstances of each case," Wayt told Fox News Digital.

"A 12-year prison sentence is within that range. When cases resolve like this one did with a plea, prosecutors and defense attorneys work together to balance accountability with fairness. Occasionally, that can result in a plea deal that appears lenient to the public but is consistent with the specific facts of the case and how prior cases have been resolved."

Galle, meanwhile, did not comment as he left the courtroom, WPEC reports. He was flanked by his father and his attorneys as he entered and left the court.

He will have to serve a minimum of 85% of his prison sentence and the sentence will be followed by seven years' probation, per WPEC. His driver's license was also revoked for three years.

Galle agreed to turn himself in on Feb. 3.

As part of his sentence, Galle must post a video to social media sharing his story and advocating for the importance of safe driving, according to The Palm Beach Post. He must also perform 800 hours of community service, complete a 12-hour driving course and attend a panel where crash victims share their stories about how their injuries affected their lives.

Never need an EV charging station again with these rooftop solar power panels

Have you ever wondered how we could make our cars even greener?

Well, meet Omid Sadeghpour, a forward-thinking inventor with a brilliant idea. He’s designed rooftop solar panels specifically for his Tesla Model Y.

His project, DartSolar, harnesses solar energy while the car is parked, potentially adding up to 20 extra miles of driving range each day without ever needing to plug in. As he gets ready to roll out the next iteration, Beta2, let’s explore what makes this innovation so groundbreaking.

Electric vehicles (EVs) often spend significant time parked in open spaces, making them ideal candidates for solar energy collection. Sadeghpour's vision is simple yet effective: why not utilize the sun's energy to charge EVs while they are stationary? This concept forms the foundation of the DartSolar project.

DartSolar isn’t just about innovation; it’s also about practicality. Imagine a rooftop solar panel that’s aerodynamic, weatherproof, theft-resistant and easy to use. It opens in just 10 seconds with the same effort required to open your car door. These panels are tough, too, built to withstand wind, rain, sand and snow, ensuring reliable performance in all conditions.

YOU WON'T BELIEVE HOW FAR VOLVO'S NEW ELECTRIC SEMI-TRUCK GOES ON A SINGLE CHARGE

Omid Sadeghpour's initial prototype, known as Beta 1, was built in collaboration with Jeran Bruce at California's Forged Makerspace. This prototype is designed with nine flexible solar panels, each rated at 175 watts, which can be deployed when the vehicle is parked. The structure is made from wood and features telescoping carbon-fiber tubes that allow for easy expansion and retraction.

Weighing in at under 165 pounds, Beta 1 remains within the roof weight capacity of the Tesla Model Y and is designed to fit within a standard U.S. parking space when fully expanded.

When fully deployed, Beta 1 can generate approximately 6 kWh of power per day, which translates to about 20 miles of additional driving range. When it’s time to drive again, the system can be collapsed into a compact rooftop box in under a minute.

TESLA SEMI'S IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE ON ICE MARKS ANOTHER MAJOR TRIUMPH

Now, let’s talk about the future. Beta 2, the fifth iteration of DartSolar, takes innovation to the next level. This version swaps the wood structure for carbon fiber, cutting its height in half for better aerodynamics. The wattage capacity has also been boosted to a potential 4,000 watts, providing up to 45 miles of range per day under optimal conditions.

Here’s where things get exciting: Beta 2 introduces dynamic charging capabilities. This means the panels can charge the car while driving or in different configurations, like partially opened for better airflow or fully closed during high-speed travel. With a reduced drag loss of just 1%-2%, it’s as efficient on the road as it is when parked.
