Tom Brady on Friday described the importance of having a loss on a resume as historic as his in an interview days before Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Brady said on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" that he didn’t understand the "big deal" of winning the big game, having already won the Orange Bowl at Michigan and then a Super Bowl his second season in the NFL.

It wasn’t until he faced a crushing defeat at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII, ending a chance at a perfect season after a record-breaking season for him personally, that he really understood the effect that losing has.

"Then, you go to 2007 and you lose. And then, you go to 2011, and you go to the Super Bowl after having a great team in 2010, and we lose. And it was just like, wow this is way harder. We went 10 years between winning," Brady said. "And I said, you know what, these Super Bowl moments I get a chance to partake in, I’m going to exhaust every bit of energy I have for this week of games, because when you lose this game, this is on your resume forever.

"A loss in the Super Bowl matters more than any loss that you’re ever going to be a part of. When I go in Philly and (the fans) go ‘Philly Special, Philly Special’ and I’m at the Knicks game with my son and Spike Lee, I throw him a ball, and he catches it on his head like the ‘Helmet Catch’ – that was 17 years ago, and I’m still living that thing down."

Brady added that fans don’t bring up his losses in the conference championship games.

"They all tell me about the losses in the Super Bowl though."

Brady then told Cowherd about Patrick Mahomes and the possibility of him losing in the Super Bowl. He said it was obvious that Mahomes would want to win the Super Bowl again because, if not, he would be 3-2 in Super Bowls.

"There’s certainly a lot of pressure, from my standpoint, as I got older, and I realized the enormity of this game, how important it is to actually win this game," he added.

Brady said that in his last Super Bowl, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he spent two weeks watching film, learning Chiefs players’ movements and body language.

Brady will be on the Super Bowl call for the first time as a broadcaster.

Patrick Mahomes is on the fast track of surpassing Tom Brady as the NFL's greatest ever.

With a win in this year's Super Bowl, Mahomes would become the first player to win four rings before turning 30.

And if you compare the quarterbacks' first seven full seasons, Mahomes' numbers trump Brady's.

Brady won more than half of his rings after turning 37, cementing himself in the conversation. But the chatter will be hot and heavy if the Kansas City Chiefs can finish a three-peat, something no team has done in the Super Bowl era.

Rob Gronkowski had a front-row seat for Brady's illustrious career, winning four titles with him, three in New England, and one more in Tampa Bay. 

"Good thing I went back to football and did that," Gronkowski recalled in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.

But even Gronk knows his quarterback might be in trouble. However, it will be tough, and there's a reason why Brady has the upper hand for the time being.

"In order for Patrick Mahomes to dethrone (Brady), it’s gonna be tough because Tom beat him twice in playoff football. We absolutely demolished Patrick Mahomes," Gronkowski said, referring to the 2021 Super Bowl.

Advantage, Brady.

But that doesn't mean there's no chance for Mahomes. Gronk said Mahomes doesn't even need to match Brady in titles before being in the conversation.

"He’s gonna have to win about five, six championships in order to get in that conversation of being the greatest ahead of Tom Brady," Gronk said.

Those sentiments echo those of Victor Cruz, who already has Mahomes as the "No. 2" to Brady.

"To me, I can’t put him above [Tom] Brady just yet, but he’s right there. He’s 1A, 1B for me," Cruz told Fox News Digital in October. 

"If he gets to five and he continues to keep his team relevant year in and year out, when we look up at the numbers, it’s gonna be insane just to see where he nets out and just to see when it’s all said and done where he is, because what he’s doing thus far, it's pretty special."

First, the Chiefs will have to get through the Philadelphia Eagles, who the Chiefs beat two years ago in the Super Bowl to get Mahomes his second title. He earned his third last year against the San Francisco 49ers, the same team Mahomes beat for his first ring.

Patrick Mahomes will take the field for the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday for the first time as a father of three children. 

Mahomes and his wife Brittany welcomed their newest daughter, Golden Raye, on Jan. 12. The quarterback was fortunate enough to have earned a bye week for the weekend of Golden Raye's arrival, but returned to practice just days later. 

Now he is set to face the Houston Texans in the divisional round playoff game. He bears the historic pressure of trying to lead his team to a third straight Super Bowl – something no team has ever done – alongside the personal pressure of fathering another newborn girl.

As the only active quarterback with a realistic shot to contend with Tom Brady in all-time legacy discussion, Mahomes faces a much higher-stakes task than Brady did when he took the field as a father of three for the first time. 

Brady welcomed his third child, daughter Vivian Lake, on Dec. 5, 2012 – weeks before any do-or-die playoff action. 

But the stakes were still pretty high. And like Mahomes, Brady's first game after having his third child also came against the Houston Texans. 

Brady and the New England Patriots welcomed a Texans team that led the AFC at the time with an 11-1 record into Gilette Stadium for a Monday Night Football showdown. Brady had the Patriots at a 9-3 record, as they looked to chase Houston down for the top spot. 

And Brady didn't miss a beat.

The former Patriots quarterback had a signature game, throwing for 296 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, as New England dominated 42-14. Brady even had a whopping six rushing yards on one carry, which was a good night on the ground for him by his standards in those days. 

After the game, Brady relished the win as the perfect ending to the week, as he informed reporters that his then-wife, Giselle Bundchen, was doing well after the birth. 

"She is doing very well," Brady told reporters of Bundchen after the game. "It's been a great week, a great way to end it."

Mahomes has a high bar to live up to. But if he does pull off a similar performance to the one Brady did in 2012, his performance may be even more amplified in how it is recognized. 

With a divisional round victory, Mahomes and the Chiefs will be just two wins away from taking home their unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title. The spotlight will be even brighter on Mahomes and his wife on Saturday than it was on Brady in 2012, as Taylor Swift is set to attend, possibly alongside Brittany. 

And like Brady's 2012 game, Saturday may be the last time Mahomes ever plays football right after having a child. 

"I’m good with three for right now," he told reporters on Tuesday when asked whether he would have another child. "We’ll see down the line, maybe, but my goal was always three, so we’ve had three, and we’ll stick there for a while and see if we need to come back and get another one later on."

California authorities have confirmed a new death toll of 16 as the wildfires continued to rage around Los Angeles on Sunday. Thousands have lost their homes as first responders continue to try to get control over the flames. 

Gov. Gavin Newsom has invited President-elect Donald Trump to visit California amid the wildfires and fighting over budget decisions. The governor has faced criticism for approving a budget that slashed $100 million in firefighting and fire prevention funding.

Newsom did issue an executive order on Sunday to remove some regulatory hurdles and procedures to accelerate rebuilding homes and business faster.
