Ex-NFL star discusses why Deion Sanders should stay in college

16 January 2025 at 05:30

After totally turning around the University of Colorado football program, there seems to be some smoke about Deion Sanders potentially moving to the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys had reached out to Sanders, who all but declined the opportunity — but, he did admit it was "intriguing."

Sanders himself said he would consider coaching the NFL if it meant continuing to coach his sons. Shedeur is in the running to be the top selection of this year's NFL Draft.

But even though the idea of the family affair continuing sounds appealing, one NFL great says he'd prefer to see Sanders stay in college, for very good reason.

Simply put, Vince Wilfork thinks college kids need Coach Prime more than the professional athletes do.

"He’s more of an asset for college, because he can touch so many young kids," Wilfork said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. "Everybody has their own dream, but outside looking in, he can touch more lives when it matters than having a guy making millions of dollars and you can’t get through to him. They can get to that point with his leadership.

"What he stands for can really help those young guys. I’d rather see him help the kids, because they need it more than the guys making millions of dollars. I just see him as a trailblazer at this level."

Sanders' first coaching gig came with Jackson State, and once he got the Colorado job, several players followed, including his sons as well as Travis Hunter, who went on to become this season's Heisman Trophy winner as a two-way superstar. Hunter, too, is slated to be a top-five pick, just like his quarterback.

When Hunter won the Heisman, he shared a long embrace with his coach, crying on his shoulder.

The Buffaloes controlled their own destiny into the College Football Playoff, but got out of the running of the Big 12 championship game after losing to Kansas in the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Deion Sanders received 'very credible threat' before Colorado game this season, security team reveals

8 January 2025 at 16:20

Colorado coach Deion Sanders has made a name for himself in the college football world and is become a Buffaloes icon in just a matter of three seasons, but the former NFL player has also become a polarizing figure to some. And, according to his security team, he’s been subjected to multiple threats because of it.

In the latest season of the "Coach Prime" docuseries which aired on Prime Video earlier this week, Sanders’ personal security, officer Michael Rhodes, revealed that Sanders received a "very credible threat" before a game during the 2024 season.

"Coach gets a lot of mail every day, a lot of packages — a lot of gifts," Rhodes said in the second episode as he put on gloves in preparation of reviewing Sanders’ mail.

"As he stated publicly, he gets a lot of death threats, a lot of hate mail, so just as a precaution, we go through the mail very carefully. Put on these gloves just to ensure that we don’t come into contact with any type of hazardous material."

Rhodes said he served as a member of Jackson State’s campus police for around 10 years when he was asked to be a member of Sander’s security detail during his tenure there. When Sanders was offered the job at Colorado, he asked Rhodes to join him.

Since then, Rhodes has had his hands full.

He said in the episode that before a Sept. 14 game against Colorado State, they received "multiple threats concerning people trying to do harm to Coach."

"There was a very credible threat — two individuals trying to possibly tackle Coach either before, during, or after the game," he continued. "So we had to have multiple law enforcement agencies there — SWAT team, CSUPD as well as Boulder PD."

Rhodes said during games he keeps his head "on a swivel" watching for any potential threats in the crowd and around the stadium.

"Everybody doesn’t love Coach. With all of the death threats, I don’t know who is who. I’ve got one job, and that’s to make sure that Coach is good, to make sure he’s safe, so that he can go out and coach the team to a victory."

The Buffaloes closed out the 2024 season on a high note despite a blowout loss to BYU in the Alamo last month.

Colorado made their first Bowl game appearance since 2020 and sold out every home game for the past two seasons — a first in the program’s 134-year history. Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy, and he and Shedeur Sanders are expected to be first-round draft picks in the 2025 NFL Draft in April.

Deion Sanders takes aim at 'multiple IDIOTS' suggesting he will choose where his sons play in NFL

30 December 2024 at 19:09

"Coach Prime" had time on Monday to call out "multiple IDIOTS" on social media who believe they know where he wants his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, to play in the NFL.

Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, posted his thoughts on X after seeing other social media users suggesting teams he doesn't want Shedeur specifically to play for.

Week 17 brought up a large shakeup of the 2025 NFL Draft order, as the New York Giants, owners of the No. 1 overall pick, shockingly beat the Indianapolis Colts to fall to No. 4 on the list.

If the season ended on Monday, the New England Patriots would own the first overall pick having just taken Drake Maye third overall back in April.

"It will be multiple IDIOTS that will say things that totally aren’t true regarding where I would like @ShedeurSanders & @ShiloSanders to play in the @nfl," Sanders tweeted. "If I say it I will say it directly to whom it may concern not a attention seeker. I do know @nflcommish personally!"

The significance of the NFL Draft chatter comes after Shedeur was seen with custom Giants cleats before his final Buffaloes game against BYU, a 36-14 loss in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

DEION SANDERS ADAMANT HIS SON SHEDEUR WILL BE THE NO. 1 OVERALL PICK IN THE NFL DRAFT

And that came after video of Shedeur on the practice field went viral after he said, "We know where we are going, you'll see them in the cleats later on this week."

Considering the Giants are in need of a franchise quarterback after Daniel Jones was cut mid-season, Shedeur, considering as a possible first overall pick in April, was among those linked to the team.

Those connections continued as Shedeur was spotted having a catch with Giants star rookie receiver Malik Nabers in the streets of New York City, as the former was in town for teammate Travis Hunter's Heisman Trophy ceremony.

But now, the Tennessee Titans, another team in need of a quarterback with Will Levis and Mason Rudolph not cementing the role, sit above the Giants in the draft order at No. 2 overall.

One could even make the argument that the Cleveland Browns, owners of the third overall pick, could be after a quarterback even with Deshaun Watson signed on for years to come.

As for Shilo, there are questions whether the 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back will be drafted at all. He possesses strong tackling traits, but his coverage skills are lacking in the eyes of experts.

But Coach Prime has made it clear he believed Shedeur will be taken with the first overall pick, and he's even suggested he would step in if there isn't the right structure in place in an organization that drafts his son.

Time will tell to see if that comes to fruition — an Eli Manning situation if you will — but the process has already begun for Shedeur, Shilo and the rest of NFL prospects no longer playing college games this season.

ESPN broadcasters face pro-Colorado bias accusations as Buffaloes blown out in bowl game

29 December 2024 at 11:34

The BYU Cougars picked up a huge season-ending win over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday night, thwarting the perfect sendoff for Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

The Cougars blew out the Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl, 36-14. BYU running back L.J. Martin had two touchdowns to go with 93 rushing yards, and Sione I Moa added another score on the ground to help BYU to the win.

College football fans who tuned into the ESPN broadcast of the game got pretty upset with the spotlight being heavily on Colorado, and they made their voices heard on social media.

BYU offensive lineman Connor Pay even told the broadcasters to talk more about the team, according to broadcaster Dave Pasch.

"He walked up out there (the production meeting) yesterday and said to us, ‘Talk about BYU just a little bit, would you?’ Well, we’re talking about Connor Pay, and we’re talking about BYU now," Pasch said in the fourth quarter with the Cougars up 33-7, via Awful Announcing. "I'm sure the fans in Provo would love us to talk about BYU the whole night."

Pasch’s broadcast partner Dusty Dvoracek added that BYU "gave us plenty to talk about."

Pay was among those who weighed in on the call.

SHEDEUR SANDERS RECEIVES CUSTOM GIANTS CLEATS BEFORE FINAL COLLEGE GAME AS G-MEN OWN NO. 1 PICK

For what it’s worth, Colorado’s Sanders and Hunter are set to become first-round picks in the upcoming draft. Not to mention, Deion Sanders is the head coach of Colorado and has rebuilt the program into one of the most captivating in the nation.

Sanders said it was "tough" knowing that some of the players he’s been coaching for the last two or three years are going to be leaving his side for the next part of their journeys.

BYU finished the season 11-2, producing their third 10-win season in the last five years. They haven’t had a run like that since the mid-2000s when they won at least 10 games from 2006 to 2009 and then again in 2011.

Kalani Sitake had the team go from a meager five wins in their first season in the Big 12 Conference last year to 11 wins and a bowl appearance.

Sitake is 5-2 in bowl games since taking over the program in 2016.
